During my school years and, later, during my university studies on Physics it became clear to me that the teaching of scientific subjects lacked creativity, imagination and depth. Having been facing anxiety and maths anxiety since I was a kid I decided to search for alternative educational paths to help my well-being and my learning, as well as my teaching competence. This led to the Montessori Method which helped me realise that behind every accomplishment we find a calm child, who can deeply focus on their work and use the stimuli of their environment in an effective and confident way. Mindfulness is a requirement for a Montessori class, even though we do not realise it at first thought. A calm mind, therefore, is able to process information, including that of Mathematics.
Mathematics Anxiety has been besetting many students and adults but, unfortunatley, it remains unknown by the majority of people working in education, even though it has been officially recognised almost 50 years ago.
Mindfulness and holistic educational approaches like that of Montessori equip teachers with patience, empathy and strong paedagogical skills which give children the space they need in order to thrive!
